Deanery Synod

THE NATURE AND DUTIES OF THE DEANERY SYNOD REPRESENTATIVE

The purpose of a Deanery Synod is to feed information from the Diocese (and General Synod) to all parishes that make up that deanery and, in those parishes, all those who take an interest in Church life. As it would be impractical for everyone to attend General Synod meetings so each Parish appoints representatives to be members of the Deanery Synod and each Deanery, in turn, appoints members to represent them on the Diocesan Synod. All such people elected are ex-officio members of the Parochial Church Council.
Deaneries are responsible for the fellowship and spirituality of their parishes, whilst offering any assistance they are in a position to provide for parishes that need such assistance.
The duties of a Deanery Synod member are as follows:

  1. To attend regularly meetings of the Deanery Synod (regular means an expectation that two thirds of all meetings will be attended)
  2. To serve for a period of three years
  3. To represent the views and needs of the benefice, where appropriate, to other members of the Deanery Synod
  4. To represent the views and needs of the other churches in the Deanery and the Deanery Synod to members of the benefice
  5. To provide written reports of each meeting of the Deanery Synod to the Parochial Church Council
  6. To encourage generally members of the benefice to pray for the Deanery, support Deanery events and to take an interest in what is happening in the Deanery
